At what age is it mandatory or highly recommended to scrap a vehicle in India?

According to India’s National Vehicle Scrappage Policy, private non-commercial vehicles must undergo a compulsory automated fitness test after 15 years. If the vehicle fails the fitness test or the Registration Certificate (RC) cannot be renewed, the car must be scrapped. In Delhi-NCR, National Green Tribunal (NGT) rules strictly prohibit petrol vehicles over 15 years and diesel vehicles over 10 years from operating or being parked on roads.

To scrap your vehicle legally, you must provide: 1. Your original Registration Certificate (RC). 2. Owner’s identity & address proofs (matching Aadhaar Card and PAN card). 3. A cancelled bank cheque (used to securely deposit the metals scrap payout). 4. If the owner has passed away, a death certificate and succession certificate/claimant letter.

Dismantling Process

Is it mandatory to clear any pending traffic challans or bank hypothecation?

Yes, absolutely. Scrappage centers cannot legally process, dismantle, or deregister a vehicle from the national Vahan database if there are active criminal cases, pending court traffic challans, or bank hypothecation loans registered against it. You must clear all pending challans and obtain a clean Bank Hypothecation Cancellation Letter / NOC before booking scrapping pickup.
